Agroecological Vegetable Gardens
In Portugal, urban vegetable gardens have increased significantly in the last ten years, with more municipal horticultural parks, vegetable school gardens or community gardens. The contexts in which they are created and their areas of intervention may be different, however in all of them we find agroecological principles - a combination of different sustainable farming practices, from permaculture to agroforestry, appreciation for agriculture and the strengthening of community dynamics and spaces.
The Agroecological Vegetable Gardens initiative values these communities in their different contexts, promoting experience sharing, cooperation and resilience, at an environmental, social and cultural level. These networks reinforce the importance of agroecology in urban contexts as well as promote the potential for replicability of each of the initiatives. This activity is developed in partnership with HortaFCUL, a project develeped by students from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, which aims to raise awareness and promote permaculture practices.
