Agroecological Routes
The 2019 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report states that halting global warming will only be possible through a drastic change in food production, consumption patterns and forest protection. In Portugal, the situation is aggravated by the risk of desertification, especially in the interior and Alentejo. FAO recognizes that an agroecological approach, involving all actors in the agricultural and food system, has the potential to speed-up the transition to resilient and sustainable food systems. It is essential to promote Agroecology in Portugal – the routes inspired by the Agroecological and Cultural Caravans of Brazil aim to strengthen the agroecology networks and communities in Portugal, taking representatives from various areas of society to visit agroecological experiences. The work of identifying agroecological experiences is done regionally, through participatory methodologies, by local communities. A Final Seminar will be held for participants to share their experiences. This event will be open to the public and aims at the co-construction of guidelines for public policy proposals to support agroecology in Portugal.
